Overview

Politics is the study of political behaviour, processes, institutions and how people interact with them. Throughout this course you will look at ongoing political issues and debates within both the UK and the USA, and you will develop the ability to discuss and analyse current affairs and political issues and debates.

Entry requirements

GCSE - 5 or above in Politics or a similar subject.

Why study this subject?

Studying A level Politics will provide insight into political beliefs central to an understanding of the modern world. The subject also develops analytical and evaluative skills in relation to interesting topics prevalent in the turbulent political climate of today.

Politics provides great critical thinking skills that would supplement a wide variety of careers and university degrees.

What can you expect from this A level?

Politics is assessed by written assessments through the skills of analysis and judgment. Throughout the course you will also be researching key issues, making connections between different areas of study and comparing different political systems. We also have opportunities to meet politicians to question their role and find out about their challenges and the local and national political landscape.

What can you do with a qualification in this subject?

The subject can lead to degrees in History, International Relations, Journalism, and Philosophy.

It also provides a pathway to a wide range of careers, including roles such as Civil Servant, Research Officer, and Journalist, with opportunities in both the public and private sectors.

Assessment

The assessment consists of three 2-hour exams, each with the same structure and question types.


Paper 1
covers Parliament, the Prime Minister, the Constitution, and Devolution, as well as elections, democracy, political parties, and pressure groups. 


Paper 2
examines US government and politics, comparing it to the UK and evaluating their effectiveness. 


Paper 3
explores Liberalism, Conservatism, and Socialism, along with an optional ideology, analysing their impact on politics.
