
Philosophy, Ethics and Religion
Overview
Philosophy, Ethics and Religion (PER) is the study of Philosophy of Religion which considers questions relating to the problem of evil and arguments for the existence of God.
Religious Ethics which considers both religious and secular moral principles. Within Buddhism students study the beliefs and practices of Buddhism including contemporary issues such as gender and sexuality.
Entry requirements
GCSE - 5 or above in Religious Studies or a similar subject.

Why study this subject?
PER supports you in developing knowledge of philosophical arguments and skills of analysis and the ability to defend your own judgements. Ethics offers a unique opportunity to debate issues pertinent to your own life while considering different perspectives taken by great thinkers. Buddhism provides access to the beliefs and practices and an opportunity to explore misconceptions of a popular Eastern Philosophy.
What can you expect from this A level?
You can expect your thinking to be challenged through studies that make you doubt your preconceived ideas or through new ideas yet to be considered. Every topic is the subject of debate and discussion and every exam question an opportunity to examine and evaluate the theories studied.
What can you do with a qualification in this subject?
Due to the facilitating nature of this subject, you will develop knowledge and skills to support your progression to university or higher level apprenticeships.
You can progress into courses in traditional humanities and social studies subjects or vocational subjects such as business management and healthcare.
Recent alumni from Newcastle Sixth Form College have progressed to study Psychology, Humanities, Modern Languages, Music Production, Politics and Philosophy, English Literature, Health, Education and Social Care and Primary Education.
Assessment
This course is assessed via two examinations. Both papers are 3 hours long.
Paper 1: Philosophy and Ethics.
Paper 2: Buddhism and Dialogues.
Modules / Topics
Component 1
Philosophy: Arguments for God’s existence, Problem of Evil, Religious Experiences, Miracles, Life after Death, Religious Language.
Component 2
Ethics: Meta Ethics, Free will and Moral Responsibility, Conscience, Natural Moral Law, Utilitarianism, Situation Ethics, Virtue Ethics, Applied ethics to human and animal life and death.
Component 3
Buddhism: The Life of the Buddha, his enlightenment, teachings and death.
